There are few things more inspiring than a good movie. I mean when Rocky runs up those steps, you pretty much walk around the rest of the day like , “Gonna fly now, flying high now … Gonna fly, fly, fly.”
Save the Waves Coalition protects coastal ecosystems around the world in partnership with local communities, utilizing a unique combination of protected areas, economics, and direct action. Specifically, they determine economic value of surf breaks, save endangered waves and have set up eight World Surfing Reserves around the globe.
They also have an international film tour called the Save the Waves Film Fest that is doing a run up the East Coast this summer.
“The film program seeks to highlight the work of international ocean activists as well as the work of our own environmental programs, which through the World Surfing Reserves program, enable local, often disenfranchised communities to stand up to multi-national corporations to fight unchecked coastal developments to preserve natural, communal resources for the enjoyment of future generations. This work seeks not only to preserve the environmental resources associated with the place, but the cultural heritage as well,” Highton continues.
Their aim is not to make films promoting nor glorifying activism, but rather film as activism.
