With a lot of buzz in the news lately, you have probably heard of the Zika virus by now. It is an awful virus that is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that has been in a specific geographical area. While the cure for Zika virus is still being researched, there are quite a few things that can be done to treat the infection while using natural remedies.
Symptoms of the Zika Virus
Many people that have been infected with the Zika virus won’t know that they have the disease, because there will not be any symptoms at first. The most prevalent symptoms of the Zika virus are joint pain, rash, fever, and conjunctivitis (red eyes). Other common symptoms are muscle pain and headache. The incubation period for the Zika virus is not known, but is thought to be a few days to a week. Overall, the illnesses is usually mild with symptoms that last for several days up to a week after being infected by a mosquito.
Normally, infected individuals do not get sick enough to need a hospital, and dying from the Zika virus is very rare. Because of this, many people do not realize that they’ve been infected. Zika virus typically remains in the blood of a person that has been infected for about a week but sometimes longer. Once an individual has been infected, they are likely to be protected from future infections.
The symptoms of Zika virus are close to those of dengue and chikungunya disease that can be spread through the same mosquitoes that carry Zika. It is advised to visit your healthcare provider if you have developed the symptoms described and have visited areas where Zika has been found. If you have recently traveled to one of these areas, notify your healthcare provider and give them the dates and location in which you have traveled. Your healthcare provider can order blood tests that look for Zika or similar viruses.
Turmeric is widely used as an herbal antioxidant with anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. To treat Zika virus symptoms, mix a half teaspoon of pure turmeric powder with a glass of organic milk, and drink this at least one time daily. This enhances the immune system and will provide the stamina to fight off health problems.
Fresh ginger tea can be made and consumed, either with or without milk. Alternately, add fresh finger to organic milk. Honey can be added to this for sweetener.
Tulsi (Holy basil) is used copiously in ayurvedic sciences and formulations. It is full of vitamins A and C, as well as other phytonutrients. Its antioxidant properties protect the body from free radicals. To use this in fighting Zika, prepare an herbal tea using Tulsi leaves and pieces of ginger. Add honey for optional sweetness and consume while warm. Another mixture can be made by using a few leaves of Tulsi with 3 or 4 black peppers, and 2 to 3 cloves. Filter this and then add in 1 teaspoon of honey. Ingest this once a day for a few days.
