Zinc: Your Thyroid Needs Some Z

Thyroid supportive vitamins and minerals really do go from Vitamin A all the way to Zinc – Last, but certainly not least on the list, is Zinc. This mineral workhorse helps with all kinds of conversions, regulations and protection.

Zinc’s responsibilities include:

Helping the hypothalamus manufacture TRH to stimulate the pituitary gland, which signals the thyroid gland to produce the thyroid hormone.

Supporting all processes that produce T4 and then converting T4 to T3.

Stabilizing T3 levels.

Vitamin B6 metabolism – Converting pyridoxine (the inactive form of B6) to pyridoxal phosphate (the active form).

Regulating melatonin production and curbing effects of excess melatonin on the thyroid.

While all of these things are important, of particular note is zinc’s role in B6 metabolism, because B vitamins factor so heavily into healthy thyroid function.

Get your daily 10 – 30 mg of Z (zinc) by eating sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, spinach, asparagus, shiitake mushrooms, quinoa, oats or opting for support with a quality supplement.

For a creamy, zinc-rich treat, take this smoothie for a spin! It weighs in at just over 10 mg of zinc. If you want something thicker that can stand in for dessert, bump up the oats to ½ up or add ¼ cup of cashews.
